Employees Turnover: Can be a serious obstacle to productivity, quality, and profitability at firms of all sizes
All businesses, large and small, have some way of keeping track of their finances. Businesses are constantly looking for more ways to keep expenses low. One factor that is often overlooked, however, is the cost of employee turnover. High employee turnover can cost a company more than they might realize in the long run.
This report explains some causes of high employee turnover, who it affects the most, and ways companies can decrease employee turnover in order to cut hidden costs.
Employee turnover occurs when employees voluntarily leave their jobs and must be replaced. Turnover is expressed as an annual percentage of the total workforce. For example, 25 percent employee turnover would mean that one-quarter of a company's workforce at the beginning of the year has left by the end of the year. Turnover should not to be confused with layoffs, which involve the termination of employees at the employer's discretion in response to business conditions such as reduced sales or a merger with another company.
The severity of turnover varies widely by type of business and the economic health of the region where companies are located. Innovative high-tech companies and the most successful manufacturers frequently experience low turnover rates while fast-food restaurant managers expect turnover to be as high as 50 to 75 percent. As another example, coal mining companies in sparsely populated regions experience lower rates of turnover because there are few other job opportunities.
WHAT IS EMPLOYEE TURNOVER?
Employee turnover is a ratio comparison of the number of employees a company must replace in a given time period to the average number of total employees. A huge concern to most companies, employee turnover is a costly expense especially in lower paying job roles, for which the employee turnover rate is highest. Many factors play a role in the employee turnover rate of any company, and these can stem from both the employer and the employees. Wages, company benefits, employee attendance, and job performance are all factors that play a significant role in employee turnover.
Causes of Employee Turnover
There are several factors that cause high turnover within companies. This report will focus on voluntary turnover, because voluntary turnover is something that companies are more able to control. Employees voluntarily quit for several reasons, specifically:
There are several factors that cause high turnover within companies. This report will focus on voluntary turnover, because voluntary turnover is something that companies are more able to control. Employees voluntarily quit for several reasons, specifically:
- pay is too low
- lack of benefits
- tasks are too repetitive
- circumstances listed above such as family, school, or moving
- poor management
- lack of advancement
- burnout
- Compensation package differences Job and employee skill mismatch: the job may be less or more satisfying and challenging according o the employee.
- Inferior facilities, tools, etc
- Less recognition
- Less or no appreciation for work done
- Less growth opportunities
- Poor training
- Poor supervision
- Less work and life balance practices
The performance of the organization - an organization perceived to be in economic difficulty will also raise the specter of impending layoffs. Workers believe that it is rational to seek other employment.
The organizational culture - much has been written about organizational culture. It is sufficient to note here that the reward system, the strength of leadership, the ability of the organizations to elicit a sense of commitment on the part of workers, and its development of a sense of shared goals, among other factors, will influence such indices of job satisfaction as turnover intentions and turnover rate.
The characteristics of the job - some jobs are intrinsically more attractive than others. A job's attractiveness will be affected by many characteristics, including its repetitiveness, challenge, danger, perceived importance, and capacity to elicit a sense of accomplishment. A job's status is also important, as are many other factors.
EFFECT OF EMPLOYEES TURNOVER
High turnover can be a serious obstacle to productivity, quality, and profitability at firms of all sizes. For the smallest of companies, a high turnover rate can mean that simply having enough staff to fulfill daily functions is a challenge, even beyond the issue of how well the work is done when staff is available. Turnover is no less a problem for major companies, which often spend millions of dollars a year on turnover-related costs. For service-oriented professions, such as management consulting or account management, high employee turnover can also lead to customer dissatisfaction and turnover, as clients feel little attachment to a revolving contact. Customers are also likely to experience dips in the quality of service each time their representative changes.

I wish you and your family all the bright, hues of life -Happy Holi!
UJJWAL ANURAG, Editor-In-Chief, CEO, Business SandeshHoli is also known as the Festival of colors in India. It is a spring festival and perhaps the happiest and most colorful religious festival of the Hindus.
The Holi
celebrations begin on the last day of Phalgun. People collect sticks and straws
lying in streets at a place. At night they gather at that place and set fire to
the huge pile of sticks and straws. They sing songs to the accompaniment of
drums. They are mad with joy. They break up when the fire fades out.
The main celebration follows the next day. People are in a
happy mood. They sprinkle colored water on another. They smear their faces with
colored powders. Children spray colored water on the passes-by.
Even the old people are mad with joy. All people are in a
jolly mood. They forget social distinctions. They mix with all freely. In our
villages people move about with colored water. They sing, dance, and jump
about. They beat drums and sing loudly in a chorus. In the evening they visit
their friends and neighbors.
We should celebrate Holi in a decent
way. We must realize that it is a festival of joy and friendship. We should
share our joy with others.

SOCIAL
ENTREPRENEURSHIP : ujjwal.anurag@businesssandesh.in MARKET
BASED SOLUTION TO ADDRESS SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENT PROBLEMS.
Social entrepreneurship uses innovative, market – based solutions to address social and environment problems. These solutions can be a new product, new approach to resolving these community challenges.
Social entrepreneurship is about applying practical, innovative and sustainable approaches to benefit society in general, with an emphasis on those who are marginalized and poor.
A social enterprise exists primarly to provide a solution to a social or environmental problem, and must use a business approach that works financially. Social enterprises are different from traditional enterprise in that their key focus is to positively impact society and the environment.
They use their profits to
rainforce the social impact of their enterprise.
Social enterprises are not the
same as business focused on the use of social media (eg. twitter) or social
marketing.
Social enterprises are also not the same as companies that only make philanthropic donations or organize and other community engagement initiatives. Social entrepreneurship has gained renewed currency in a world ever more divided between haves and the have-nots. They distinguish themselves from other social venture players by doing, not talking. They are relentlessly focused on impact.
A term that captures a unique approach to economic and social problems, an approach that cuts across sectors and disciplines grounded in certain values and processes that are common to each social entrepreneur, independent of whether his/ her area of focus has been education, health, welfare reform, human rights, workers' rights, environment, economic development, agriculture, etc., or whether the organizations they set up are non-profit or for-profit entities.
It is
this approach that sets the social entrepreneur apart from the rest of the
crowd of well-meaning people and organizations who dedicate their lives to
social improvement.
Social business ventures.
The entrepreneur sets up a for-profit entity or business to
provide a social or ecological product or service. While profits are ideally
generated, the main aim is not to maximize financial returns for shareholders
but to grow the social venture and reach more people in need. Wealth
accumulation is not a priority and profits are reinvested in the enterprise to
fund expansion. The entrepreneur of a social business venture seeks investors
who are interested in combining financial and social returns on their
investments.
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS.
Social entrepreneurs drive social
innovation and transformation in various fields including education, health,
environment and enterprise development. They pursue poverty alleviation goals
with entrepreneurial zeal, business methods and the courage to innovate and
overcome traditional practices. A social entrepreneur, similar to a business
entrepreneur, builds strong and sustainable organizations, which are either set
up as not-for-profits or companies.
Social entrepreneurs tackle major social issues, from increasing the college enrollment rate of low-income students to fighting poverty. They operate in all kinds of organizations: innovative non profits, social-purpose ventures, and hybrid organizations that mix elements of nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Promoting systemic social change is the real objective. Like business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs see and act upon what others miss: opportunities to improve systems, create solutions and invent new approaches that create social value. And like the best business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs are intensely focused and hard-driving in their pursuit of a social vision.
Social entrepreneurs are driven to produce measurable returns. These results transform existing realities, open up new pathways for the marginalized and disadvantaged, and unlock society’s potential to effect social change. Social entrepreneurs operate within a social context rather than the business world, they have limited access to capital and traditional market support systems. As a result, social entrepreneurs must be skilled at mobilizing human, financial and political resources.
